How to Draw an Orange: Step-by-Step for Kids
An orange is a circle with a dimpled skin, a little green stem and leaves. You can also draw a cut slice to show the juicy segments inside.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Orange and green pencils
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing an Orange
Step 1: Draw the circle
Draw a round circle, slightly wider than it is tall.
Step 2: Add a small dent on top
At the top, draw a small curved dip where the stem attaches.
Step 3: Draw the stem and leaves
In the dip, draw a small circle for the stem. Add two pointed oval leaves, one on each side.
Step 4: Add the peel texture
Dot tiny dots or small dashes all over the circle to look like the bumpy skin.
Step 5: Draw a slice
Next to the orange, draw a smaller circle and a second circle inside it. Divide the inside into eight wedges with straight lines from the centre, like a bicycle wheel.
Step 6: Add juice details
Draw a small curve in each wedge to show the juicy pulp.
Step 7: Add shine and shadow
Leave a white spot near the top left of the whole orange and draw a soft shadow under it.
Step 8: Outline and erase
Trace with a marker and erase the guide lines.
Colouring Your Orange
Use bright orange for the skin with a darker orange along one side for shading. The slice has a paler orange rim and a lighter yellow-orange inside. The leaves are green.
Tips for Drawing an Orange
- Do not make the circle too perfect. A slightly uneven circle looks more like real fruit.
- Wedges should be equal. Draw north, south, east and west lines first, then split each part in two.
