This folding surprise drawing shows a smiling boy who suddenly opens his mouth to reveal a row of missing teeth. It is one of the funniest folding tricks to draw, and in this tutorial Parikshet shows you how to line up the fold so the surprise works perfectly.

  • A4 paper
  • Pencil and rubber

  • Skin-tone, pink, brown and black colour pencils

How to Draw the Boy Without Teeth Folding Surprise Step by Step

  1. Step 1 — Fold the top third of your paper downward so you have a flap that lifts up like a door.
  2. Step 2 — With the flap closed, draw the boy's full face: a round head, two eyes, eyebrows, a nose and a small closed smile.
  3. Step 3 — Add hair on the top of the head, ears on the sides, and a neck and collar at the bottom.
  4. Step 4 — Make sure the smile sits right on the fold line, so it will open when the flap lifts.
  5. Step 5 — Colour the boy's face skin-tone, hair brown or black, and shirt any bright colour you like.
  6. Step 6 — Now lift the flap. The lower half of the face is on the page underneath.
  7. Step 7 — Re-draw the mouth as a huge wide-open O shape, stretching above and below the fold line.
  8. Step 8 — Inside the giant mouth draw the gums, a tongue at the bottom, and only one or two tiny teeth with big gaps — the surprise is that most teeth are missing!
