How to Draw a Football: Step-by-Step for Kids
A football is a round ball covered in black and white shapes. The pattern of five-sided and six-sided shapes is what makes it look right.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Black marker
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Football
Step 1: Draw the ball
Draw a large circle.
Step 2: Draw the centre pentagon
In the middle, draw a five-sided shape, a pentagon, with one point facing up.
Step 3: Add lines outward
From each corner of the pentagon, draw a short line toward the edge of the circle.
Step 4: Draw the surrounding hexagons
Between those lines, draw curved six-sided shapes that fit together like a honeycomb.
Step 5: Add the outer pentagons
Near the edge of the circle, draw partial pentagons that get squashed as they go around the curve.
Step 6: Fill the black shapes
Colour each pentagon solid black.
Step 7: Add shading
On the bottom right of the ball, add a soft shadow with light pencil.
Step 8: Outline and erase
Trace the outline with a marker and erase the pencil lines.
Colouring Your Football
The pentagons are black and the hexagons are white. Use a light grey pencil on one side of the ball for shading and draw a soft grey shadow on the ground.
Tips for Drawing a Football
- The shapes near the edge should look squashed. That shows the ball is round.
- Draw all the black pentagons first, then join them.
