How to Draw a Volcano: Step-by-Step for Kids

Volcanoes are one of nature's most dramatic and powerful forces. Here is how to draw a spectacular erupting volcano with lava and ash clouds!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Red, orange, grey, and brown markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Mountain Outline

Draw a wide triangle shape for the volcano — but with slightly curved, irregular sides rather than perfectly straight lines. Real volcanoes are never perfectly symmetrical. Make the base very wide and the peak near the top of your paper.

Step 2: Add the Crater Opening

At the top of the triangle, instead of a sharp point, draw a wide oval opening — this is the crater where the eruption comes from. The crater is a wide, slightly irregular bowl shape.

Step 3: Draw the Eruption Explosion

From inside the crater, draw a large explosive burst shape rising upward — like a mushroom cloud or cauliflower of smoke and ash. Make it billow out wide at the top.

Step 4: Draw the Lava Flows

Down the sides of the volcano, draw several rivers of lava — thick, irregular flowing lines that wind down the slopes. Lava flows follow the lowest path and pools at the bottom. Make the edges wavy and organic.

Step 5: Add Lava Bombs

Coming out of the eruption cloud, draw several teardrop or oval shapes flying outward — these are lava bombs (chunks of rock thrown from the explosion). Add motion lines behind each one.

Step 6: Draw the Base and Landscape

At the base of the volcano, draw the surrounding landscape — flat ground with rocks. The lava has destroyed most vegetation near the base. Add a few dead trees on the lower slopes.

Step 7: Add the Ash Cloud

Extend the eruption cloud to the sides with dark ash clouds spreading across the sky. Use jagged, irregular edges for the ash clouds to make them look turbulent.

Step 8: Add Lightning Bolts

Inside the eruption cloud, draw lightning bolt zigzag shapes — volcanic eruptions often create their own lightning storms! These add drama to the scene.

Adding Colour

The mountain body is dark brown or grey. The lava flows are bright orange-red fading to darker red at the edges. The eruption cloud ranges from dark grey-black at the bottom to lighter grey at the top. The sky is dark red-orange, glowing from the eruption.

Tips from Parikshet

  • Lava should look like it is flowing — use curved, wavy edges that suggest it is moving downhill.
  • The eruption cloud should be the biggest element — bigger than the mountain itself for a dramatic eruption.
  • A dark, glowing sky is what gives the whole scene its dramatic feel — make the background dark!
