The snail is one of the cutest and simplest creatures to draw — a spiral shell, a soft body, and two little eye-stalks. It's a perfect quick drawing and a great way to practise drawing a spiral. Parikshet shows you how to draw a snail step by step.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Brown and green markers
  • White for the eyes
  • Black pen for outlines

How to Draw a Snail Step by Step

  1. Draw the shell spiral — start with a spiral in the middle of your page (like a swirly lollipop), then draw a circle around it to make the round shell.
  2. Draw the body — a long, soft, wavy body coming out from under the shell, like a flattened sausage with a curved front.
  3. Add the head end — the front of the body rises up slightly to form the head.
  4. Draw the eye stalks — two stalks rising from the head, each with a small round eye at the tip. Snails have their eyes on the ends of stalks!
  5. Add a smile — a small friendly smile on the head for a cute cartoon snail.
  6. Add shell detail — make the spiral line on the shell bold and clear; it's the snail's main feature.
  7. Add a slime trail (optional) — a wavy shiny line behind the snail showing where it has slid.
  8. Colour — a brown or swirly-patterned shell and a green or grey body.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: The spiral shell is the heart of a snail drawing — draw a clear, bold spiral and circle it to make the round shell. The two eye-stalks are the second key feature. Get the spiral shell and the eye-stalks right and you've definitely drawn a snail.

🌟 Did You Know?

A snail carries its home on its back its whole life — the shell grows with the snail and it can pull its whole body inside for protection. Snails move by gliding on a trail of slime they make themselves, which lets them slide smoothly and even crawl upside down! Garden snails are famously slow, travelling only about 1 metre in around 5 minutes.

Snail Drawing Key Features

  • Spiral shell — the bold swirl is the #1 feature
  • Eye stalks — two stalks with eyes on the tips
  • Soft wavy body — gliding along underneath
  • Slime trail — a shiny wavy line behind it

🎯 Try This: Draw a Snail Race

  1. Draw three snails with different shell patterns.
  2. Line them up at a start line on a leaf or path.
  3. Add slime trails behind each one and a finish line ahead.
  4. Add a number on each shell and a tiny trophy for the winner.
