The solar system is our Sun and the eight planets that orbit around it. In this tutorial Parikshet shows you how to draw all eight planets in order, around a big bright Sun, with the right size differences and colours so it looks like a real solar system poster.

🎨 What You Need

  • A4 white paper (landscape works best)
  • Pencil and rubber
  • Black marker
  • Yellow, orange, red, brown, blue, green, beige and grey colour pencils
  • Optional: glitter pen for stars

How to Draw the Solar System Step by Step

  1. Step 1 — On the far left of your page, draw a large yellow Sun — a big circle with little flame triangles going around it.
  2. Step 2 — Moving right, draw the first tiny grey circle: Mercury, the smallest and closest planet to the Sun.
  3. Step 3 — Next, draw Venus — slightly larger than Mercury and coloured yellow-orange.
  4. Step 4 — Draw Earth: a medium blue circle with green continent patches on it.
  5. Step 5 — Draw Mars: smaller than Earth and red-orange in colour, the famous "red planet".
  6. Step 6 — Draw Jupiter: the biggest planet of all, with horizontal beige and brown stripes and one small red dot for the Great Red Spot.
  7. Step 7 — Draw Saturn slightly smaller than Jupiter, with a wide flat ring going around it on a tilt.
  8. Step 8 — Finally draw Uranus (light blue, on its side) and Neptune (deep blue). Outline everything in black marker, draw dotted orbit lines around the Sun, and add tiny star dots in the background.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: Make Jupiter and Saturn clearly bigger than Earth — that size difference is what makes your drawing look like the real solar system instead of just a row of circles.

Jupiter is so big that all the other seven planets in the solar system could fit inside it with room to spare. And Saturn is so light that, if you could find a giant bathtub big enough, it would float in water.
