How to Make the Shark Folding Surprise Step by Step
- Mark the fold line — use a ruler to draw a light horizontal line about one-third up from the bottom of the page.
- Draw the calm scene (upper section) — draw a peaceful ocean scene with a small fish or a swimmer floating happily near the surface.
- Plan the shark on the fold-up flap — on the bottom third, draw a huge open shark mouth: rows of sharp white teeth, a red mouth interior, ready to appear when folded up.
- Line up the surprise — position the shark mouth so it rises up around the fish/swimmer when the flap folds up — surprise, a shark!
- Add the shark's eyes and nose — above the mouth on the flap, so the full shark face appears when folded.
- Colour the ocean — blue water for both sections so it flows seamlessly across the fold.
- Add bubbles and details — to tie the scene together.
- Test the fold — fold the flap up: the calm scene becomes a giant shark!
🌟 Did You Know?
Sharks have been around for over 400 million years — that's longer than trees, and long before the dinosaurs! Most sharks grow and replace their teeth constantly; some can go through over 30,000 teeth in a lifetime, because new ones are always growing to replace lost ones. Despite their scary reputation, most shark species are harmless to humans and play a vital role keeping the oceans healthy.
Folding Surprise Tips
- Fold line first — everything depends on its placement
- Teeth on the fold — the dramatic shark mouth appears at the crease
- Consistent ocean colour — so it flows across the fold
