A teacup is a perfect beginner drawing subject — elegant curves, a handle, and a saucer teach kids about symmetry and simple 3D shaping. Add a pattern and steam for a finished, polished result.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Your favourite colour marker for the cup
  • Black pen for outlines
  • Optional: light blue for the steam lines

How to Draw a Teacup Step by Step

  1. Draw the cup body — a trapezoid shape (wider at the top than the bottom) with the top edge slightly curved.
  2. Add the rim — a thin oval at the very top of the cup to show the opening is round, not flat.
  3. Draw the base — a smaller curved line at the bottom to show the foot of the cup.
  4. Add the handle — on the right side, draw a D-shape handle connecting to the upper and lower parts of the cup.
  5. Draw the saucer — a wide, flat oval below the cup, with a slightly raised rim.
  6. Add a pattern — flowers, dots, stripes, or a simple repeated motif on the side of the cup.
  7. Draw steam — two or three wavy lines rising from the top of the cup.
  8. Colour and shade — a light shadow on the inside of the cup makes it look hollow and three-dimensional.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: The rim oval at the top is what makes the cup look three-dimensional. Without it, the cup looks flat. The rim should be a slightly squished oval (wider than it is tall) sitting right on top of the trapezoid shape.
