How to Draw a Lotus Flower: Step-by-Step for Kids
The lotus grows on water, with pointed petals that open in layers and a flat green pad beneath. Draw the middle petal first and add petals in pairs.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Pink and green pencils
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Lotus Flower
Step 1: Draw the middle petal
Draw an upright pointed oval in the centre. It is the tallest petal.
Step 2: Add the first pair
Draw a slightly shorter pointed petal on each side of the middle one, leaning outward and overlapping it a little.
Step 3: Add the second pair
Draw two more petals lower down, tilted further to the side, tucked behind the first pair.
Step 4: Add the outer petals
Draw one last pair of wide, almost horizontal petals at the base, curving upward at the tips.
Step 5: Draw the petal lines
Add one or two soft curved lines inside each petal to show the ridges.
Step 6: Add the lily pad
Under the flower, draw a big flat oval with a small notch cut into it, like a pizza with a slice missing. Draw thin lines from the middle to the edge.
Step 7: Draw the water
Draw wavy lines and small ripple ovals around the pad.
Step 8: Outline and erase
Trace with a marker and erase the pencil.
Colouring Your Lotus Flower
Colour the petals pink, deeper at the base and almost white at the tips. Use a warm yellow in the centre. The pad is green with a darker green edge, and the water is light blue.
Tips for Drawing a Lotus Flower
- Draw the petals from the middle outward. The middle petal should be the tallest.
- Petal tips point up but the outside petals should curve slightly, so the lotus looks open.
