What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White paper or cardstock
- Black marker
- Green, red, gold, and blue coloured pencils or watercolours
Step-by-Step: Drawing and Painting a Christmas Tree
Step 1: Lightly Sketch the Tree Shape
Draw a tall triangular Christmas tree shape — narrow top, wide base — with a short rectangular trunk below. Keep all pencil lines light since you'll colour over them.
Step 2: Add Branch Layers
Draw horizontal wavy lines across the triangle at equal intervals from top to bottom. Each layer droops slightly at the ends like real pine branches.
Step 3: Make Branch Tips Pointed
Along the outer edge of each branch layer, draw small pointed triangular spikes going outward — individual pine branch tips. Vary the size slightly for a natural look.
Step 4: Draw Decorations
Scatter round baubles and star shapes across the tree. Add a large star at the very top. Draw a zigzag garland looping from branch to branch in wide U-shapes with small circles for lights along it.
Step 5: Draw the Snowy Background
Draw a ground line below the tree with bumpy snow drifts on either side. Add asterisk-shaped snowflakes scattered around the tree in the background.
Step 6: Outline the Tree
Go over all pencil lines with black marker — thick outer outline, thinner interior branch lines. The decorations get their own neat outlines.
Step 7: Apply Background Colour First
When colouring, start with the background — deep navy blue or purple for a night sky. Let it dry before colouring the tree so the colours don't bleed into each other.
Step 8: Colour the Tree and Decorations
Paint the tree in layers of green — dark green in shadow areas between branches, bright green on the outer tips. Baubles in red, gold, and blue. Star in brilliant gold. Snow in pure white with the tiniest touch of pale blue shadow.
Colouring Tips
For a glowing night scene, add small yellow dots all over the dark navy background to suggest distant stars. White dots on the dark background create a magical snowing effect.
Parikshet's Tips
- Colour the background FIRST then the tree — this prevents the green from bleeding into the sky.
- A dark background makes any Christmas tree drawing look a thousand times more magical.
- Practice every day and you'll get better!
