Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Pour enough full-fat milk into your shallow plate to cover the entire bottom — about 1 cm deep.
  2. Let the milk settle for 30 seconds until the surface is completely still.
  3. Drop one small drop of each food colouring colour around the plate, spaced evenly apart. Use bright contrasting colours for the best visual effect.
  4. Dip the tip of a cotton swab into your dish soap bottle to pick up a small amount of soap.
  5. Gently touch the soapy swab tip to the very centre of the plate of milk. Do not stir, drag, or move the swab — just touch and hold still.
  6. Watch the colours explode outward from the centre in an incredible swirling pattern. The effect lasts 20 to 30 seconds.
  7. Move the swab to a new spot and touch again to trigger another colour explosion from that point.

The Science Behind It

Milk contains fat molecules spread evenly through the liquid. Soap molecules have two ends: one that is attracted to water, and one that is attracted to fat. When you touch the soap to the milk, the fat-seeking ends of the soap molecules rush in all directions through the milk to grab onto fat molecules — and they drag the food colouring with them as they go. The colour patterns show exactly where the soap is travelling through the milk.
