Step-by-Step: Drawing a Sunflower (June Favourite)

Step 1: Draw the Centre Circle

In the centre of your paper, draw a large circle about the size of a tennis ball. This is the dark seed head at the centre of the sunflower.

Step 2: Add the Dot Pattern to the Centre

Inside the circle, fill it with a spiral pattern of small dots or tiny circles arranged in a spiral — like a pinecone or the seeds in a real sunflower. This spiral pattern is what makes sunflower centres look special. Start from the centre outward.

Step 3: Draw the First Ring of Petals

Around the centre circle, draw a first ring of petals. Each petal is long and oval-shaped with a slightly pointed tip, like a stretched teardrop. Space them evenly around the circle — aim for 12 to 16 petals in this first ring.

Step 4: Add a Second Ring of Petals Between the First

Between the gaps of the first ring of petals, add a second ring of slightly shorter petals. These peek out from behind the front petals. This layering gives the sunflower a full, lush appearance.

Step 5: Draw the Stem

Below the flower head, draw a thick, strong stem extending straight down. Sunflower stems are substantial — make it thick and slightly textured with a few short lines along its length.

Step 6: Add Two Large Leaves
