A DIY volcano is a classic kids science experiment where you build a volcano shape, then make it erupt using a chemical reaction between bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. The whole project takes about thirty minutes including the eruption and is one of the most exciting at-home science experiments.

🎨 What You Need

  • Empty plastic bottle, 500 ml size
  • Large tray to catch the lava
  • Newspaper and brown paper for the volcano shape
  • PVA glue or flour paste
  • Bicarbonate of soda — 3 tablespoons
  • White vinegar — half a cup
  • Red and yellow food colouring
  • Washing-up liquid — one squirt

How to Build and Erupt a DIY Volcano

  1. Stand the plastic bottle in the centre of a large tray to protect your surface.
  2. Scrunch up newspaper around the bottle to build a cone shape, leaving the bottle opening clear at the top.
  3. Cover the cone in brown paper strips dipped in PVA glue, smoothing them to make the volcano look rocky.
  4. Leave to dry overnight, then paint the outside brown and grey with streaks of red lava.
  5. To erupt, pour 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into the bottle through the top.
  6. Mix half a cup of vinegar with red food colouring and one squirt of washing-up liquid in a jug.
  7. Quickly pour the coloured vinegar into the bottle and step back.
  8. Watch the fizzy red lava bubble and overflow down the sides of your volcano.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: Add a squirt of washing-up liquid to the vinegar before pouring. It creates much thicker, bubblier lava that flows slowly down the sides like the real thing.
