The volcano experiment is the most famous home science experiment in the world — and for good reason. You build a model volcano and watch it 'erupt' with bubbling, foaming red lava made from baking soda and vinegar. It teaches kids about chemical reactions in the most exciting way possible.
🧪 What You Need
- A small empty plastic bottle (250-500ml)
- Modelling clay, papier-mâché, or wet sand to build the volcano shape
- A tray or baking dish to catch the eruption
- Baking soda — 3 tablespoons
- Vinegar — about 100ml
- Red food colouring
- Washing-up liquid — a small squirt
- Warm water
How to Make and Erupt the Volcano
- Place the bottle on a tray — work on a tray or in a baking dish to catch the eruption.
- Build the volcano around the bottle — use modelling clay, papier-mâché, or wet sand to shape a volcano around the bottle, leaving the bottle's opening clear as the 'crater'.
- Decorate it — paint or colour the volcano brown and grey, and add a green base for vegetation.
- Add the dry ingredients to the bottle — pour the 3 tablespoons of baking soda into the bottle. Add a small squirt of washing-up liquid and a few drops of red food colouring on top.
- Add a splash of warm water — about a tablespoon, to help the reaction happen quickly.
- Predict the eruption — make a guess: how high will the lava rise? How long will it last?
- Pour in the vinegar — pour about 100ml of vinegar into the bottle and stand back!
- Watch the eruption! — the volcano will fizz and foam with bubbly red 'lava' pouring out of the crater, just like a real volcano.
🔬 What's Happening? (The Science)
This is a classic acid-base reaction. Vinegar is an acid (acetic acid) and baking soda is a base (sodium bicarbonate). When they mix, they react to produce water, a salt, and lots of carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide gas bubbles are what make the 'eruption' — they rapidly fill the bottle and push the liquid up and out. The washing-up liquid traps the gas in bubbles, making thick foamy lava instead of just splashing water, and the food colouring makes it look like red-hot lava. Real volcanoes erupt for a very different reason — pressure from gases trapped in molten rock deep underground — but the bubbling, foaming effect is similar to what you see in your model.

Why does the volcano erupt?
When baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) mix, they react chemically and release lots of carbon dioxide gas in a very short time. The gas rapidly fills the bottle and pushes the liquid up and out, creating the foaming, bubbling 'eruption'. The washing-up liquid catches the gas in lots of bubbles, making thick, dramatic foam instead of just splashing water.
Is this like a real volcano?
Real volcanoes erupt for a very different reason — they're powered by pressure from gases trapped in molten rock (magma) deep underground. When the pressure becomes too great, the magma blasts up through a crack in the Earth's surface. But the bubbling, foaming effect you see in your model IS similar to what happens when those underground gases escape with the magma.
Is the experiment safe?
Yes, with adult supervision — but follow the safety tips. Wear goggles if you can, don't put your face over the bottle, don't taste the lava, and work on a tray or outside because the eruption can splash. Vinegar in the eyes stings, so rinse with water if it happens. Use plastic, not glass, for the bottle, just in case it gets knocked over.
