How to Draw a Gorilla: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids

Gorillas are the largest primates on Earth — powerful and intelligent. Here is how to draw an impressive gorilla in the classic knuckle-walking pose!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Black, dark grey, and brown markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Massive Body

Draw a very large, wide oval for the gorilla's body. Gorillas are extremely broad-chested — make the body nearly as wide as it is tall. This is the largest shape in your drawing.

Step 2: Draw the Wide Head

At the top of the body, draw a broad, slightly squarish head. Gorilla heads are large and wide with a pronounced sagittal crest (a ridge running front to back on top of the skull that creates a sloped appearance).

Step 3: Add the Face

Draw a flat, wide muzzle area in the centre lower face — like a large rounded rectangle. Add small, deep-set eyes above the muzzle, a broad flat nose, and a closed, straight mouth. Gorilla faces have a serious, contemplative expression.

Step 4: Draw the Small Ears

On each side of the wide head, draw small, relatively tiny ears. Gorilla ears are small and close to the head.

Step 5: Draw the Long Powerful Arms

Gorillas knuckle-walk — their arms are longer than their legs. Draw two very long arms angling forward and downward to the ground, with large hands on the ground (fingers curled under in the knuckle-walking position).

Step 6: Draw the Short Legs

Below the body, draw two shorter, powerful legs in a bent crouching position. The legs are shorter than the arms. Add large flat feet.

Step 7: Add Muscle Definition

Draw curved lines on the shoulders and arms to show the enormous muscle mass. Gorilla shoulders are extremely wide and muscular. Add chest muscle curves on the front of the body.

Step 8: Add Fur Texture

Cover the entire body with short fur stroke lines radiating from the centre of each body section outward. The chest may have slightly shorter fur than the arms and back. Adult male gorillas have a silver-grey patch on the back.

Adding Colour

Gorillas are black to dark grey-brown. The face, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet are a slightly lighter brownish-black. A mature male silverback has grey-silver fur across the lower back — add this patch in silver-grey.

Tips from Parikshet
