How to Draw a Dragon: Step-by-Step for Kids

A dragon combines a reptile head, bat-like wings, strong legs and a long tail. Build it in pieces and it is much easier than it looks.

What You'll Need

  • Pencil (HB or 2B)
  • Eraser
  • White drawing paper
  • Black marker for the outline
  • Red, green or purple colours
  • Yellow and orange for the fire
  • Coloured pencils or crayons

Step-by-Step: Drawing a Dragon

Step 1: Draw the head

Draw a wedge shape that is wide at the back and narrows to a snout, like a rounded triangle lying on its side. Add a nostril near the tip and a curved line for the mouth.

Step 2: Add horns and spikes

Draw two curved horns sweeping back from the top of the head. Add a row of small triangles along the neck for spikes.

Step 3: Draw the neck and body

Draw a long S-shaped neck that leads down into a large oval body. The neck should curve like a swan's.

Step 4: Add the wings

From the shoulder, draw a bent line, like an arm, with a pointed joint. From that joint draw three long curved fingers. Join their tips with scalloped lines to form the wing membrane.

Step 5: Draw the legs

Draw a thick back leg with a knee that bends backward and a front leg tucked close to the chest. Finish each foot with three sharp claws.

Step 6: Add the tail

From the back of the body, draw a long tapering tail that curves in an S. Add a small arrow-shaped point at the tip.

Step 7: Add fire and scales

Draw flames coming out of the mouth as three wavy tongues of fire. Sketch rows of small curved lines on the body for scales, and a lighter belly with horizontal stripes.

Step 8: Outline and erase

Trace with a marker and erase the pencil guide lines.

Colouring Your Dragon

Try green, red or deep purple for the body and a lighter yellow or cream for the belly. Use orange in the middle of the flames and yellow on the outside. Make the wing membrane a slightly lighter shade than the body.

Tips for Drawing a Dragon

  • Draw the wings first as a skeleton, an arm with three fingers, and add the skin last.
  • Keep the neck long and curved. A short neck makes a dragon look more like a lizard.
