How to Draw the Grim Reaper: Step-by-Step for Kids
The Grim Reaper is one of the most iconic Halloween figures — the hooded skeleton carrying a scythe. Here is how to draw this dramatic spooky figure!
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Paper
- Black, grey, and white markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Sketch the Tall Figure Pose
Lightly sketch a tall, thin stick figure in a dramatic stance — one arm raised holding the scythe, the other extended slightly. The Grim Reaper is tall and looming.
Step 2: Draw the Hooded Cloak
Over the stick figure, draw a large, flowing black hooded robe. The hood creates a deep shadow where a face would be. The cloak flares dramatically at the bottom — like a bell shape that billows and swirls. Add some ragged, torn edges along the bottom hem.
Step 3: Draw the Deep Hood
At the top of the cloak, draw the hood in a deep pointed arch. Inside the hood, draw a dark oval — this is the shadowed face area. Inside the shadow, draw just two small glowing points or oval eyes. No face visible — just darkness and those two glowing eyes.
Step 4: Add the Skeleton Hand
From one sleeve of the robe, draw a skeletal hand gripping the scythe — draw individual finger bones as thin rectangles with knuckle lines. Only four or five fingers visible.
Step 5: Draw the Scythe Handle
The scythe has a very long staff — longer than the entire body. Draw a long curved staff from the raised hand extending well above the figure's head. The staff is dark wood, slightly curved.
Step 6: Draw the Scythe Blade
At the top of the staff, draw the large curved blade — a long sweeping crescent shape with a sharp inner edge. The blade curves dramatically back over and above the Reaper's head.
Step 7: Add Floating Effect
At the bottom of the cloak, instead of visible feet, let the robe fabric swirl and fade into nothing — or show just the tips of skeleton feet barely visible in the shadows. This floating, footless appearance adds to the supernatural quality.
Step 8: Add Background Drama
Draw a full moon behind the Grim Reaper. Add bare, dead trees silhouetted in the background. Draw a ground of scattered bones or fallen leaves below the floating figure.
Adding Colour
The robe is solid black with very dark grey shadow areas showing the folds. The eyes inside the hood glow eerie white, yellow, or green. The scythe blade is silver-grey with a white sharp edge. The moon is pale yellow. Everything else is dark.
Tips from Parikshet
- The most important detail is the hood — deep, shadowed, with only glowing eyes visible inside. No visible face is scarier than any face you could draw.
- The billowing, torn cloak bottom adds drama — let the fabric swirl and fray dramatically.
- Make the scythe blade enormous — much bigger than you think it needs to be. The Grim Reaper's scythe should be imposing!
