Step 1: Draw a Large Block Letter J

Draw a tall, thick capital block letter J in the centre of your paper. The J has a straight vertical stroke at the top and a curved hook at the bottom. Make the letter thick — the thickness is where the 3D depth will go.

Step 2: Choose Your Light Source Direction

Decide where your imaginary light is coming from — top-left works best for most people. All your depth lines will go in the opposite direction: toward the bottom-right.
