This Shorts version of the 3D floating J illusion focuses on the graphite pencil technique — using different pencil grades to create smooth, professional-looking dimensional shading rather than the grid method. Perfect for artists who want a more refined look.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil grades: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Eraser (kneaded eraser ideal)
  • Blending stump
  • White drawing paper
  • Ruler for the initial guide lines

How to Draw 3D Letter J with Graphite Shading

  1. Draw the letter J outline — bold, thick-stroked J in HB pencil. Make the strokes about 1.5cm wide.
  2. Add the three-dimensional depth — from each visible edge of the J, draw short parallel lines going in one direction (e.g., down-right) with your ruler.
  3. Connect the depth lines — join the endpoints of each depth set to form the side faces.
  4. Shade the side faces — using 4B or 6B pencil, fill the side faces solidly dark. These receding faces carry all the shadow.
  5. Shade the front face — using 2B, apply lighter shading to the front face of the letter. Leave a highlight strip near the light source side.
  6. Blend — use the blending stump to smooth all shading for a professional graphite look.
  7. Draw the cast shadow — beneath the letter, draw a soft shadow shape that mirrors the letter's footprint, blending it outward.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: Use your darkest pencil (6B or 8B) for the side faces only. The dramatic contrast between dark sides and lighter front face is what creates the dimensional illusion — if the sides are too light, the letter looks flat.
