How to Draw an Anime Face in Profile (Side View): Step-by-Step for Kids

Drawing a face from the side is a classic anime skill. Once you master the profile view, you can draw characters like Goku, Naruto, and all your favourite anime heroes!

What You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Skin tone and hair colour markers

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Draw the Head Circle

Draw a circle for the head. Unlike a front-facing head, the profile uses only the right half of this circle as the back of the skull. The front of the face will extend forward from the left edge of the circle.

Step 2: Add the Jaw Line

From the bottom of the circle, draw a line angling forward and slightly downward to the chin point. The chin is a small, clean point in anime side profiles.

Step 3: Draw the Nose Bump

From the forehead area (upper-left of the circle edge), draw a line coming forward with a small pointed bump for the nose. In anime, the nose in profile is a small, clean triangle or simple bump — never detailed like a realistic nose.

Step 4: Add the Lips and Chin

Below the nose, draw a slight upper lip curve, then a lower lip, then the chin line returning to the jaw. In anime, lips are simple — just two subtle curved lines, with the lower lip more pronounced.

Step 5: Draw the Side-View Eye

In the side view, the eye is a triangle or narrow almond shape. Draw a curved upper lid line and a straight or slightly curved lower lid. Add the iris as a partial circle inside. The eye appears much thinner than in a front view.

Step 6: Add the Ear

On the right side of the head circle, draw a small C-shaped ear. Position it roughly in line with the eye and nose. Add the inner ear whorl details inside the C shape.

Step 7: Draw the Hair

Add the character's hairstyle sweeping from the top of the head. Anime hair in profile shows the hair going over the top of the head and falling to one side. Add spiky points for a shonen style or smooth sweeps for a calmer character.

Step 8: Add the Neck and Shoulders

Below the jaw and chin, draw the neck extending downward. In profile, the neck connects to the front of the jaw and the back of the head separately. Add shoulder shapes at the bottom of the neck.

Adding Colour

Use your character's established colours — Goku's black hair with orange gi, Naruto's blonde hair and orange tracksuit. In anime side profiles, the shadow falls on the far side of the face (not visible in this view) so the visible face is mostly evenly lit.

Tips from Parikshet

  • The nose in anime profile is very small — just a tiny bump or point. Overdrawn noses look un-anime immediately.
  • The eye in profile is very narrow — just a thin triangle. Don't try to draw a full round eye from the side.
  • Practice the profile by drawing it repeatedly — it is harder than the front view but looks incredibly cool once mastered.
