Fun Drawing Techniques Every Kid Should Know: Step-by-Step
Whether you are a total beginner or want to level up your drawing, these essential techniques will make every drawing better from day one!
What You'll Need
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Ruler
- Paper
- Coloured pencils or markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: The Shape Foundation Method
Before you draw anything, identify what basic shapes make up the subject. A person is: circle head, oval torso, rectangle limbs. A car is: rectangles and circles. Once you see the shapes, you can draw anything.
Step 2: The Gesture Sketch
For characters and animals, start with a gesture — a flowing stick figure that captures the pose and movement. This gestural first step keeps your drawing lively and prevents stiffness.
Step 3: The Contour Line Method
Practice drawing only the outline of objects — looking at the object, not at the paper, as you draw. This blind contour exercise trains your hand-eye coordination faster than almost anything else. Your first attempts will look messy — that is normal and correct.
Step 4: Pressure Control for Line Weight
Vary your pencil pressure as you draw — press hard for dark, bold lines and press very softly for delicate, thin lines. Lines that vary in weight look more interesting and professional than lines that are the same width throughout.
Step 5: The Squint Test for Values
Squint your eyes when looking at your drawing. This blurs the details and lets you see only the light and dark areas (the values). If the values look flat and uniform when squinted, you need more shading contrast.
Step 6: The Grid Method for Accuracy
If you want to copy an image accurately, draw a grid of squares over the reference and the same grid on your paper. Copy one square at a time. This breaks an overwhelming whole into manageable small pieces.
Step 7: Negative Space Drawing
Instead of drawing the object itself, draw the shapes of empty space AROUND the object. Negative space drawing forces you to look at shapes more accurately and bypasses the brain's tendency to draw what it thinks it sees rather than what is actually there.
Step 8: The Daily Fill-a-Page Challenge
Set yourself a challenge: fill one page per day with whatever comes to mind — one drawing, ten thumbnail sketches, or a hundred tiny doodles. The habit of drawing daily is worth more than any single technique.
Practice Exercise
Pick one small household object (mug, shoe, fruit) and draw it three times: once without looking at it (from memory), once from observation, and once using the shape method. Compare the three drawings and see what each approach taught you.
Tips from Parikshet
- Mistakes are not failures — they are information about what to adjust. Never throw away a drawing because of mistakes.
- The most important drawing tool is your eyes — half of drawing is learning to actually see what is in front of you, not what you think is there.
- If you can draw ten circles, ten squares, and ten triangles confidently, you can draw anything. Those three shapes really are the foundation of everything.
