Number drawings are a clever way to learn shapes — you take a digit (in this case the number 5) and turn it into a recognisable picture. The number 5 makes a perfect apple because its rounded bottom matches the apple's shape.
🎨 What You Need
- White paper or sketchbook
- HB pencil and rubber
- Black fineliner
- Colouring pencils — red, green, brown
How to Turn the Number 5 into an Apple
- Write a big number 5 — about half the height of your page, with a flat top and rounded bottom.
- Round the top — curve the flat top of the 5 so it becomes a soft dome shape.
- Close the side — draw a matching curve on the right side of the 5, connecting the top to the bottom curl.
- Form the apple body — you should now have a rounded apple-shaped outline made from the original number.
- Add the stem — a small brown rectangle on the top centre of the apple.
- Draw a leaf — a pointed oval next to the stem, with a vein line down the middle.
- Highlight on the apple — a small white curved shape on the upper-left to show shine.
- Ink and colour — red for the apple, green for the leaf, brown for the stem.

Why use the number 5 for an apple?
The shape of a 5 already has the curved bottom of an apple — it's the easiest digit to convert.
Can I make the apple green?
Yes — Granny Smith apples are bright green, and golden apples are yellow-green.
What if my number 5 is wonky?
That's fine — wonky apples look more natural than perfectly round ones.
Is this for very young kids?
Yes, this is brilliant for ages 4–7 who are learning both numbers and basic drawing.
