💡 Perfect if you're thinking...
The bunny rabbit is one of the most universally loved drawing subjects — oversized ears that dwarf the body, a fluffy round form that begs to be hugged, a twitching nose, and a pompom tail. Getting the proportions right is the key: cartoon bunnies work on exaggeration. Parikshet's step-by-step guide creates a sitting bunny that looks perfectly soft, round, and adorable.
🖍️ What You Need
- Pencil and eraser
- White or light grey marker for the main body
- Pink marker for the inner ears, nose, and cheeks
- Black fine-tip pen for the eye detail and outlines
- Optional: coloured pencil for a subtle fur texture
How to Draw a Bunny Step by Step
- Draw the body — a large, plump oval slightly taller than wide. This is the bunny's fluffy torso. Make it generously round.
- Draw the head — a slightly smaller circle sitting on top of the body oval, overlapping it slightly. The head-to-body size ratio for a cute bunny is about 1:1.5.
- Add the ears — two very long, narrow oval shapes extending upward from the top of the head. Here is the key proportion: the ears should be nearly as long as the ENTIRE body and head combined. Inside each ear, draw a narrower pink oval running almost the full length.
- Draw the face — two large round eyes with dark pupils and white highlight dots. A tiny round pink nose at the centre. A Y-shaped mouth below (draw a short vertical line from the nose, then branch it into two short diagonal lines going down-left and down-right).
- Add whisker dots and lines — three or four small dots on each side of the nose (whisker roots), then extend long, slightly curved whisker lines outward from each side.
- Draw the front paws — two small, rounded paws extending from the front of the body, with 3 small curved lines on each to suggest toes.
- Draw the back feet — two large, elongated oval shapes at the base of the body pointing outward to each side. Rabbit back feet are disproportionately large — make them noticeably bigger than the front paws.
- Add the tail and fur texture — a small, perfectly round pompom at the back of the body. Add short feathery pencil strokes along the chin, cheeks, and chest for fluffy fur texture.
🌟 Did You Know?
A rabbit's ears can measure up to 10cm long in domestic breeds and up to 27cm in wild jackrabbits. Rabbit ears serve two purposes: they can rotate nearly 270 degrees to detect sounds from any direction, and they are packed with blood vessels that help regulate body temperature by radiating heat away from the body on warm days.
Drawing Different Bunny Expressions
The same bunny shape takes on a completely different personality with different facial expressions:
- Excited bunny — wide open eyes, big smile, both front paws raised in the air, ears pointing straight up.
- Sleepy bunny — half-closed eyes (draw the top eyelid as a curved line low across the eye), small relaxed smile, ears drooping slightly outward.
- Scared bunny — very wide eyes with tiny pupils, small open O mouth, ears pressed flat back against the head.
- Cheeky bunny — one eye winking (closed), slight sideways grin, one ear up and one ear flopped to the side.
🎯 Try This: Draw a Bunny for Every Season
- Draw the same bunny pose four times.
- Spring: bunny holding a flower, surrounded by butterflies.
- Summer: bunny in sunglasses holding an ice cream.
- Autumn: bunny in a cosy scarf kicking through leaves.
- Winter: bunny building a snowman with tiny carrot nose.
