A candy cane is the classic red-and-white striped sweet shaped like a walking stick — and it is one of the easiest Christmas drawings you can do. In this short tutorial Parikshet shows you how to draw a glossy candy cane in just a few steps.
🎨 What You Need
- Plain paper
- Pencil and rubber
- Black marker
- Red colour pencil or crayon
- Optional: white gel pen for shine
How to Draw a Candy Cane Step by Step
- Step 1 — Draw a long, slightly curved line going down the page — this is the back of the candy cane.
- Step 2 — At the top, curl the line over into a smooth hook, like the handle of a walking stick.
- Step 3 — Draw a second line running parallel to the first all the way down, keeping the same hook at the top, so the cane has thickness.
- Step 4 — Close off both ends of the candy cane with small curves so they look rounded, not flat.
- Step 5 — Across the length of the cane, draw diagonal stripes — these should be evenly spaced and all leaning the same way.
- Step 6 — Outline everything with a black marker and rub out the pencil lines.
- Step 7 — Colour every alternate stripe red, leaving the stripes in between white.
- Step 8 — Add a thin white highlight along one edge with a gel pen or by leaving a white strip — this makes the candy look shiny.

How do I draw the candy cane hook?
Start with a long straight or slightly curved line, then curl the top over into a smooth U-shape, like the top of a walking stick or an umbrella handle.
Which direction should the stripes go?
All the stripes should lean diagonally in the same direction along the length of the cane — usually slanting from top-left down to bottom-right.
Do I need to draw thick or thin stripes?
Medium-thick stripes look best, all roughly the same width. Too thin and they look stringy, too thick and the red takes over the white.
How do I make the candy cane look shiny?
Leave a thin white stripe down one side, or add a few small white sparkle dots. The shine tells the eye that the candy is hard and glossy.
