How to Draw a Tulip: Step-by-Step for Kids
A tulip is a cup-shaped flower with a long stem and two tall leaves. It is one of the simplest flowers to draw.
What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White drawing paper
- Black marker for the outline
- Pink, red or yellow pencil for the petals
- Green pencil
- Coloured pencils or crayons
Step-by-Step: Drawing a Tulip
Step 1: Draw the cup
Draw a rounded egg shape, wider at the bottom, for the flower bud.
Step 2: Add the top edge
At the top of the egg, draw three points, like a small crown. The middle point is a petal in front.
Step 3: Draw the petals
From each point, draw a curved line down the flower to show the petals overlapping each other.
Step 4: Add the stem
From the bottom of the bud, draw two long lines that curve slightly.
Step 5: Draw the leaves
From the base of the stem, draw two long, narrow leaves that curve outward and end in points.
Step 6: Add petal details
Draw a few soft curved lines on each petal to show the shape.
Step 7: Add the ground
Draw a small mound of soil at the bottom and one or two more tulips beside it.
Step 8: Outline and erase
Trace with a marker and erase the guide lines.
Colouring Your Tulip
Use pink, red, yellow or purple for the petals, with a slightly darker shade on the sides. The stem and leaves are green, with a lighter green on the leaf edges.
Tips for Drawing a Tulip
- Keep the stem long and slightly curved. A short, straight stem looks stiff.
- The front petal should be the biggest so the tulip looks full.
