How to Draw a Lighthouse Step by Step
- Use your ruler to draw two tall vertical lines that get slightly closer at the top — this is the lighthouse tower.
- Close the bottom with a horizontal line for the base.
- At the top of the tower, draw a small platform with a railing using short vertical lines.
- Above the platform, draw the light room — a small box with a window inside.
- On top of the light room, add a pointed roof and a tiny ball with a flag at the very top.
- Divide the tower into stripes with horizontal lines, ready for that classic red-and-white pattern.
- At the base, draw rocks and waves with curvy lines, then add a few seagulls in the sky.
- Outline with fine-liner, erase pencil lines, and colour the stripes red and white, the light room yellow, and the sea blue.
🌟 Did You Know?
The oldest known lighthouse, the Pharos of Alexandria, was built around 280 BC in Egypt and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Tips for a Brighter Lighthouse
- Add yellow rays around the light to show it is shining.
- Use a darker blue at the bottom of the sea and lighter blue near the horizon.
- Draw small shadows on one side of the tower so it looks 3D.
- Add a tiny boat in the distance to give the picture scale.
🎯 Try This Mini Challenge
- Draw the same lighthouse at three different times of day — morning, sunset and night.
- Change the sky colour for each version.
- At night, make the light beam extra bright with yellow and white.
- Display all three pictures side by side.

Why are lighthouses painted in stripes?
The bold stripes help sailors spot the lighthouse from far away during the day, even in mist or fog.
What shape is best for a lighthouse drawing?
A tall narrow shape that gets slightly thinner at the top works best, just like real lighthouses.
Should I draw the lighthouse on rocks or sand?
Most lighthouses sit on rocky cliffs or small islands, so rocks make your drawing more realistic.
Can I draw a lighthouse without a ruler?
Yes, but the walls might be wavy. Beginners get a much neater result with a ruler.
