A hand holding — or hosting — a butterfly is a classic pencil sketch that teaches two important skills at once: hand anatomy and symmetrical wing design. This tutorial is approachable for beginners aged 9 and up.

🖍️ What You Need

  • Pencil (HB for guidelines, 2B for shading)
  • Eraser
  • White drawing paper
  • Optional: coloured pencils for the butterfly wings

How to Draw a Hand with Butterfly Step by Step

  1. Sketch the hand — draw four fingers close together and the thumb angled outward. Keep the palm open and flat.
  2. Add finger details — draw knuckle lines and fingernail shapes at the tips.
  3. Draw the butterfly body — a small elongated oval on the index finger, with a round head and two antennae.
  4. Add upper wings — two large symmetrical rounded triangle shapes spreading from the body.
  5. Add lower wings — two smaller rounded shapes below the upper wings.
  6. Draw wing patterns — spots, circles, and veining lines inside the wings. Mirror the pattern on both sides.
  7. Shade the hand — light shading on the underside of fingers and palm gives the hand a 3D look. Keep the butterfly lightly coloured for contrast.
💡 Parikshet's Tip: Draw the butterfly wings with a fold down the centre — this makes each wing look like it has two panels and gives the drawing much more depth and realism.
