What You'll Need
- Pencil (HB or 2B)
- Eraser
- White paper
- Black marker
- Coloured pencils or crayons (white, red, orange, black, yellow)
Step-by-Step: Drawing Pennywise
Step 1: Draw the Oval Head
Start near the top of your paper. Draw a large oval — slightly wider than tall. Pennywise has a classic round clown face, white-painted with exaggerated features.
Step 2: Draw the Large Clown Ruff (Collar)
Below the head oval, draw Pennywise's iconic ruffled collar. Draw a wide, wavy zigzag shape — like a flower with many rounded petals going all the way around the neck. The collar is large and dramatic.
Step 3: Draw the Eyes — Mismatched and Creepy
In the upper half of the face, draw two eyes. The right eye (on your left) points slightly inward (wall-eyed). Each eye is a large almond shape with a wide iris. The pupils should be small and uneven — one slightly larger or at a different angle than the other. This mismatched look is what makes Pennywise unsettling.
Step 4: Draw the Iconic Red Smile
In the lower half of the face, draw an enormous grinning mouth that stretches nearly from ear to ear. The smile curves sharply upward at each end. Inside the smile, draw large pointed teeth in the upper jaw and a dark interior. The corners of the smile have red smear lines extending outward.
Step 5: Add the Red Nose
In the centre of the face, between the eyes and mouth, draw a large round ball nose. Make it perfectly circular and fill it in red. This is the classic clown nose detail.
Step 6: Draw the Hat
On top of the head, draw Pennywise's signature tall top hat. It has a wide brim and a tall rectangular crown. Add a decorative band around the base of the crown, with a small orange tuft of hair visible on the sides of the head beneath the hat.
Step 7: Add Face Paint Lines
Draw upward-curving lines above each eyebrow (white face paint detail), small triangles above each eye pointing upward, and thin lines extending from the corners of the mouth.
Colouring Your Pennywise
The face is white. The nose and mouth corners are bright red. The collar and costume can be silver-grey or white with orange pom-poms. The hat is black with an orange or red band. The hair peeking out is a bright orange tuft. The eyes have yellow-orange irises with small dark pupils.
Parikshet's Tips
- The key to a scary Pennywise is the mismatched eyes and the enormous smile — exaggerate both.
- The red colour on the nose and mouth should be bright and vivid against the white face.
- Practice makes perfect!
