Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Use a funnel (or carefully fold a piece of paper into a cone shape) to pour 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into your plastic bottle.
  2. Pour half a cup of white vinegar into a separate cup — do not add it to the bottle yet.
  3. Stretch the opening of the rubber glove over the mouth of the bottle. Make sure it is sealed tightly so no gas can escape.
  4. Carefully tip the vinegar into the bottle through the glove opening, letting it slide down while keeping the glove sealed on top.
  5. Quickly seal the glove around the bottle opening and hold it there.
  6. Watch the glove inflate by itself as if an invisible ghost is filling it with air!

The Science Behind It

Bicarbonate of soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) react together in an acid-base reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas. The gas has nowhere to go except upward — so it flows into the glove and inflates it. The same reaction happens in your stomach when certain antacid tablets neutralise stomach acid, and it is the same reaction that makes bread rise in the oven.
