Step-by-Step: Drawing Rocks

Step 1: Draw the Main Large Rock

In the centre of your paper, draw an irregular, lumpy oval shape — NOT a perfect oval. Rocks are never perfectly smooth, so make the edges slightly bumpy and uneven. One side can be flatter, another more rounded.

Step 2: Add Two Smaller Rocks Nearby

To the left and slightly below the main rock, draw a second smaller rock — again with irregular edges. To the right, draw a third even smaller rock. Overlap the edges of the rocks slightly so they look like they're grouped together.

Step 3: Add Cracks and Lines

On the surface of the largest rock, draw two or three irregular crack lines — thin, slightly jagged lines that meander across the surface. Real rocks have natural fracture lines. Don't make the cracks perfectly straight.

Step 4: Draw a Flat Underside Shadow

Below each rock where it meets the ground, draw a very flat, dark oval shadow shape. This shadow anchors the rocks to the ground and makes them look solid.

Step 5: Add Surface Texture Dots

Lightly across the surface of each rock, add tiny dots and small random marks. Real rocks have tiny pores, grains, and mineral specks on their surface. Keep these marks light and random.
