How to make it

Lay out everything before you start. Crafts go a lot smoother when you are not hunting for the glue with sticky hands. Watch the video once first, then pause at each step and copy along.

Take your time with the cutting. Slow scissors give clean edges, and clean edges make the final piece look ten times nicer. If a cut goes wrong, do not worry, you can usually trim around it.

Tips that make a difference

  • Use a glue stick for paper-on-paper and liquid glue only for small joints. Liquid glue can warp paper if you use too much.
  • Press each glued piece for a slow count to ten. It feels long, but the bond holds much better.

Materials Needed

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start with your paper landscape (wide). Fold the top-right corner down to meet the left edge, making a diagonal crease. Unfold and repeat from the top-left corner to the right edge. Unfold again — you now have an X crease at the top of your paper.
  2. Make a horizontal fold across the paper just at the bottom of that X crease. Fold the top section down on this line and press firmly. Unfold.
  3. Push in the sides of the top section along the diagonal creases you made, flattening it into a triangular point at the top. This forms the frog's head and front legs.
  4. Fold the bottom left and right corners of the triangle up to meet the top point. These become the front feet.
  5. Fold both sides of the remaining rectangular section in to meet the centre line. Crease firmly.
  6. Fold the bottom half upward. Then fold the bottom half back down to meet the fold you just made — creating a zigzag accordion fold at the back. These are the frog's back legs and the jump spring mechanism.
  7. Flip the frog over. Press down on the back of the frog with your finger and release quickly — watch it leap!

Tips for Best Results

  • Stiffer paper makes a much stronger spring and produces much bigger jumps — try cardstock for maximum distance.
  • Make sure your accordion fold at the back is as tight and even as possible. The more energy it can store, the further the frog jumps.
